Recent Advances in Optofluidics
Dr. Qingli Kou
University of Paris-Sud

Microfluidics has been developed intensively during last decade because of its potential applications in biology and health science. Microfluidics deals with the behavior, precise control and manipulation of fluids that are geometrically constrained to a small, typically sub-millimeter, scale. Small quantities of sample, from nanoliter to femtoliter, can now be  manipulated and analysed on a chip. Integration of optical and microfluidic functionalities is highly desirable for a “lab-on-a-chip” device to allow sensitive and non invasive manipulation and detection. Optofluidics, a new branch of microfluidics, has been created to meet this goal.

This seminar will give a brief review of recent progress in optofluidics. The talk will then focus on the development of passive and active optofluidic components, such as optical resonators and microfluidic dye lasers, at University Paris-Sud XI. The very recent work on laser intracavity detection of microdroplets will also be presented.

Dr Qingli KOU was graduated from University of Science and Technology of China in 1984. She received her Master and Ph.D. degrees in optics and photonics from University of Pierre Marie-Curie Paris 6, in 1986 and 1990, respectively. From 1990 till now, she has been an assistant and then an associate professor at University of Paris-Sud XI, doing her research at Laboratory de Photophysique Moléculaire (LPPM-CNRS), where she worked on high-resolution molecular spectroscopy. Since 2003 she started a close collaboration with Laboratoire de Photonique et de Nanostructure(LPN-CNRS) on photonic and microfluidic device. Her current interest is focused on microfluidic lasers and optical microcavities for biological detection. She has been partners of numerous national and Europeen projects, such as BNM, ISORAC, PHOMOST, etc. She is currently the project manager of “on-chip microfluidic laser spectroscopy” supported by the foundation “Triangle de la Physique” of Advanced Thematic Research Network (RTRA) in France.
